How can you tell if you have a Real ID California license?

The nationwide rule taking effect May 7 has people checking their driver’s license for proof of Real ID.

As the REAL ID deadline approaches, how can Bay Area residents apply?

What do I look for?

California’s license has one of the more obvious indicators: not just a star, but a white star on a gold silhouette of a bear. The logo is in the upper right corner of the driver’s license (or the official state identification card).

Do I need to do anything when I renew my license?

Because the state has been issuing Real ID-compliant licenses since 2018 — and the deadline has been pushed back multiple times — it’s understandable that some people have forgotten they went through the process of submitting documents to prove their identity and address.

Once a license holder has been approved, the Real ID logo shows up on any subsequent California license without the need to resubmit documents.

What if I don’t have one on May 7?

The new rule says a standard driver’s license is no longer accepted when passing through airport security for a domestic flight. The traveler must have a Real ID-compliant license or one of a few acceptable alternatives, including a valid passport.

The Department of Homeland Security said Tuesday that, in the early days of the rollout, most people without a Real ID will eventually be allowed on their flight but that they should allow time for extra screening.

Because of an increase in Real ID applications in recent weeks, the California Department of Motor Vehicles has encouraged people who don’t immediately need one to wait until the activity dies down. The application process can be started online but requires an office visit to complete it.
