The fatal collision happened about 5:15 a.m. and shut down all northbound lanes on U.S. Highway 101 near the Interstate 280 connector, according to the agency. The CHP issued a Sig Alert for severe traffic that remained in effect past 7 a.m.

Authorities did not identify the dead person immediately.

Few details of what happened were available immediately, but initial reports confirmed by the CHP indicated that a person called in and said they believed they’d hit a person on the highway.

The CHP did not have a time estimate for when the northbound lanes on the highway would re-open. They urged motorists to seek alternate routes.
