Breaking: Armadillo Willy’s BBQ abruptly closes all but 1 restaurant location

If you’re a fan of Armadillo Willy’s Texas-inspired smoked meats, sauces made inhouse and spicy peanut coleslaw, you’ll have to get your fix in San Mateo from now on.

The Bay Area chain founded 42 years ago abruptly closed its three other restaurants at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

“Sadly, we closed our Santa Clara, Blossom Hill and Sunnyvale locations last night,” the company’s Matt Granville confirmed in an email Wednesday morning.

The Dublin location shut down April 19 and the Los Altos location earlier this year.

Remaining open with a full menu of smoked ribs, brisket, chicken, pork plus burgers, wings and side dishes, is the restaurant at 2260 Bridgepointe Parkway in San Mateo.

The chain has its roots in Texas-style barbecue. Founder John Berwald visited more than 100 barbecue joints in the Lone Star state to gain enough expertise to open his first Armadillo Willy’s in Cupertino in 1983. The chain quickly expanded to several locations throughout the Bay Area.

This is a developing story. Come back for updates.
