Man fatally shot at Oakland homeless camp

OAKLAND — A man was fatally shot at an East Oakland homeless camp Tuesday morning, authorities said.

Police were trying to confirm the man’s name before it was publicly released.

The shooting happened about 8:55 a.m. at a homeless camp in the 2200 block of East 12th Street.

Officers responding to a gunfire detection system alert found the man on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. Officers provided life saving measures at the scene before the man was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Police have not yet said if the man lived at the camp or was visiting someone there.

A motive for the killing has not been determined. No arrests were announced and no suspect information was released.

The killing is the sixth homicide investigated by Oakland police this year, the same number as this time last year.

It is not the first time there has been deadly violence at the camp.

Last October, a man living there was killed when, while standing outside the camp, he was hit by an out-of-control car and knocked through a portion of the wrought-iron fence that surrounds the camp. And in September, 2023, a 32-year-old man who lived at the camp was fatally shot there.
