The fire was reported just before 2 p.m. in the 2400 block of Los Gatos-Almaden Road.

As firefighters raced to the scene, they received reports that people were possibly trapped inside one of the three buildings, San Jose Fire Department Battalion Chief Brett Maas told reporters at the scene. The blaze was upgraded to two alarms as a result.

Maas said firefighters arrived to find a second-story unit on fire and flames extending into the attic. No one was found inside the building, but crews did rescue a cat.

A third alarm was called because the fire was threatening other units, according to Maas.

No one was injured, but eight units in two buildings were left uninhabitable, the fire department said in an update around 4 p.m. Crews were working to determine how many people were displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
