SAN MATEO — One person was arrested and another was hospitalized following a stabbing Wednesday in San Mateo, according to authorities.

Shortly after 11 a.m., a police officer encountered two males arguing loudly on the sidewalk near Poplar Avenue and Amphlett Boulevard, parked his patrol car and walked over to investigate, the San Mateo Police Department said in a news release.
The argument quickly escalated and the suspect stabbed the victim with a knife he was holding, police said.
The officer called for backup and ordered the suspect to drop the weapon. The suspect — identified as a 26-year-old San Mateo resident — was ultimately arrested and booked into San Mateo County jail on an assault with a deadly weapon charge.
The victim was taken to an area hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.
The case remains under investigation and authorities are searching for surveillance footage of the stabbing.
