Firebird Youth Orchestra celebrates Year of the Snake

Firebird Youth Orchestra celebrates Year of the Snake

Lunar New Year concert

The Firebird Youth Chinese Orchestra is set to perform Feb. 1, 2-3:30 p.m., at the Sunnyvale Public Library in celebration of Lunar New Year.

Lunar New Year is celebrated across many Asian cultures. It marks the start of a new calendar year based on moon cycles.

The performance will take place in the program room. Registration is not required, but seating is limited.

Programming variety

Presidential history, death and bike repair will all be addressed at upcoming programs at the Sunnyvale Public Library.

CSU East Bay Prof. Gerald Henig will address the shortcomings of some of our country’s commanders-in-chief on Feb. 2 in a talk he calls “American Presidents: All Too Human.” Henig is the author of “America’s Presidents: What Your History Teacher Never Told You.” From 3-4:30 p.m., he’ll share little-known, compelling and, in some cases, startling insights about our former presidents.

“A lightly moderated discussion of death over tea and snacks” is set for Feb. 3, 6:30-8 p.m., at the library. People in all phases of life are invited to the Death Café to come talk about death and dying in a supportive, unstructured way. It is an adult discussion group rather than a grief support or counseling session.

The Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition is holding a bike safety information and repair workshop in the library plaza on Feb. 8, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., when volunteers from Bike Sunnyvale—the local chapter of the coalition—will be onsite to teach the ABC Quick Check, share safety tips, give out bicycle goodies and answer other bike-related questions.

Professional bike mechanic Ryan Murphy will be available for advice and help with issues like changing a tire or adjusting gears or brakes. No replacement parts will be available, however.
