SF Giants trade Taylor Rogers to Reds, acquire minor-league reliever: report

The Rogers twins will no longer wear the same uniform.

The San Francisco Giants have traded left-hander Taylor Rogers to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for minor-league right-handed reliever Braxton Roxby, according to multiple reports.

Rogers, 34, pitched two seasons for the Giants after signing a three-year, $33 million deal, posting a 3.06 ERA over 111 2/3 innings with 128 strikeouts. The left-hander, the twin brother of submariner Tyler Rogers, was slated to make $12 million in 2025. With Rogers off the books, the Giants could allocate financial resources elsewhere.

The Rogers twins will have the opportunity to spend Opening Day in the same ballpark as San Francisco’s first game of the season comes on March 27 at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati.

Roxby, 25, signed with the Reds as an undrafted free agent in 2020 and has not pitched higher than Double-A. Last season, Roxby had a 5.21 ERA over 48 1/3 innings with the Chattanooga Lookouts, the Reds’ Double-A affiliate. While Roxby’s ERA was high, the right-hander posted a more savory 3.15 FIP due in part to his 65 strikeouts. A sidearmer out of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown (Division II), Roxby sits in the mid-90s with his fastball, his best pitch being a low-80s sweeper.

With Rogers headed to Cincinnati, the only other left-handed reliever currently on San Francisco’s 40-man roster is Erik Miller. The 26-year-old Miller carved out a role in the Giants’ bullpen last season as a rookie, posting a 3.88 ERA and 3.67 FIP over 67 1/3 innings while totaling 87 strikeouts.

Aside from Miller and Rogers, only two other left-handers made relief appearances for the Giants last season. Raymond Burgos pitched one lone inning in his major-league debut, while position player Mike Yastrzemski contributed an inning during a blowout loss.

Last week, the Giants reportedly signed left-hander and Newark native Joey Lucchesi, who has a career 4.10 ERA over 394 2/3 innings. Lucchesi has been a starter for most of his major-league career, but last season, Lucchesi made 10 relief appearances with the Syracuse Mets, the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets. With Syracuse, Lucchesi had a 3.16 ERA over 25 2/3 innings as a reliever compared to a 5.15 ERA over 19 starts between Triple-A and the majors.
