Half Moon Bay business owner’s plot to shoot employee foiled by gun jam, deputies say

HALF MOON BAY — A 43-year-old business owner was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after he allegedly lured an employee to a remote part of his Half Moon Bay property and tried to shoot him in the head Wednesday night, according to authorities.

Deputies were called to Coastside Fire Protection District Station 40 shortly before 7 p.m. after the victim showed up to report the incident, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

The victim told the deputies his employer lured him to a remote part of Azevedo Feed, located at 1825 Miramontes Point Road, under the guise that a fence needed repair.

After they reached the area, the employer “allegedly brandished a firearm, pointed it at the victim’s head and pulled the trigger, but the gun did not go off,” according to authorities.

The sheriff’s office said the business owner allegedly pulled the trigger several more times as the victim struggled to take the gun. One shot was eventually fired into the air, but no one was injured.

Deputies arrested the owner — identified as Thomas Azevedo — at Azevedo Feed without incident. He was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility on an attempted murder charge.

A judge signed a gun violence restraining order, which was issued and served to the business owner, according to authorities. Deputies then seized more than a dozen firearms from Azevedo Feed.

The incident remains under investigation.

Anyone with information related to the case can contact Detective D. Brandt at 650-363-4064 or [email protected], or the sheriff’s office anonymous tip line at 800-547-2700.
