Woman, children escape unharmed following gunfire in East Bay

ANTIOCH — A 30-year-old woman and four children all emerged unscathed early Sunday after a man fired gunshots at the woman, police said.

Police arrested the 30-year-old man but had to use de-escalation tactics to do so, according to a statement from police Lt. Joe Njoroge. The man is suspected of assault with a firearm on a person; domestic battery; resisting arrest, being a felon in possession of a gun; possession of a loaded gun in public and being a prohibited person in possession of ammunition.

The drama went down about 4 a.m. in the 3000 block of Ash Street.

According to police, officers responded after receiving a call from a woman who told police that the man had fired shots at her. Police also received additional calls regarding gunshots in the area.

The woman fled the scene without being hit and later told police that the man had gone back into the house, where there were several occupants including four children.

Police said they located the woman after arriving at the scene and surrounded the house. Then they ordered the man to leave the house. Police said he initially refused and that when he did come out, he did not comply with the officers’ directions.

Several minutes of de-escalation tactics followed, capped by officers taking the man into custody, Njoroge said. He remained there at the West County Detention Facility early Monday in lieu of $180,000 bail.

Nobody in the house was injured.
