ACC men’s basketball: Cal falls to Notre Dame in four-overtime thriller

Cal equaled its longest game in school history Saturday by playing a four-overtime thriller that ended with Notre Dame handing the Golden Bears a 112-110 defeat in South Bend, Ind.

Markus Burton scored a career-high 43 points and Matt Allocco nailed the go-ahead 3-pointer in the fourth overtime as Notre Dame (14-17, 8-12 Atlantic Coast Conference) outlasted Cal (13-18, 6-14) to close the regular season.

Cal freshman Jeremiah Wilkinson scored a career-high 36 points for the Golden Bears, who last played a four-overtime game in 1960.

Burton fouled out with 2:40 remaining in the fourth OT. Allocco then took over on offense, scoring eight points culminating with his 3-pointer for a 109-108 lead with 15 seconds left. The Irish forced Cal’s Wilkerson into a turnover and Cole Certa hit two free throws for Notre Dame (14-17, 8-12).

Burton scored seven points in the second overtime and Sissoko’s two free throws tied it at 88 heading to the next OT. The score was 97-all heading to OT No. 4.

Andrej Stojakovic scored 21 for the Bears, Sissoko had 14 points with 13 rebounds.

Cal advances the ACC tournament in Charlotte, N.C., on Tuesday afternoon.

No. 14 Louisville beats Stanford

Terrence Edwards Jr. and Chucky Hepburn scored 16 points apiece, and No. 14 Louisville (25-6, 18-2 ACC) ended the regular season with a 68-48 victory over Stanford (19-12, 11-9).

Maxime Raynaud recorded his 23rd double-double for the Cardinal (19-12, 11-9), scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

Stanford will begin play in the second round of the ACC Tournament in Charlotte next Tuesday.
