Cat’s Hill Classic bike race returns to Los Gatos for 49th year

A flurry of bicyclists will be making their way through the Los Gatos Almond Grove area on Saturday, and their way will be outlined by a series of road closures.

The Mike’s Bikes Cat’s Hill Bicycle Race is returning for its 49th year in town, rain or shine. About a thousand bikers and bystanders are expected to turn out for the event. The path will take cyclists on a one-mile loop from the starting line at Tait and Nicholson avenues. It includes one very steep climb, five right turns and one left turn. Several cash and merchandise prizes are available for race winners.

The Town of Los Gatos and the Los Gatos Monte Sereno Police Department announced several road closures for the event. All of the following closures and the interior streets will be in place from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday:

Tait Avenue between Bean Avenue and Highway 9
Bean Avenue between Wilder and Massol avenues
Massol Avenue between Bean Avenue and Highway 9
Bachman Avenue between Wilder and Belmont avenues
Belmont Avenue between Bachman and Ellenwood avenues
Ellenwood Avenue between Belmont and Glen Ridge avenues
Glen Ridge Avenue between Ellenwood and Bachman avenues
Nicholson Avenue between Bean and Bachman avenues
Apricot Lane between Bean and Bachman avenues

Race organizers also requested that residents in homes with sump pumps turn the pumps off the evening of March 21, because keeping them on led to slippery roads during last year’s race.

Racers and visitors are advised to not park in any merchant lots. Parking is available at the Park & Ride lot north of Highway 9, public lots or street parking outside the course.

The event is organized by the San Jose Bicycle Club. Online race registration for the race closes on March 19 at https://teamsanjose.org/section/catshill, Onsite registration opens at 7:30 a.m. and closes 15 minutes before each scheduled race start.
