Teen bicyclist seriously injured after semitruck collision in Capitola

CAPITOLA — A local juvenile is in stable condition a week after suffering serious injuries in a collision with a semitruck that occurred as he was riding an electric bicycle in Capitola.

First responders were dispatched to the intersection of 41st Avenue and Clares Street around 8:40 p.m. last Thursday after receiving reports of a vehicle colliding with a pedestrian, according to details shared in a social media post from the Capitola Police Department. After arriving at the scene, law enforcement discovered that a 17-year-old juvenile riding a Super 73 e-bike was struck by a semitruck whose driver was making a delivery to a nearby business.

According to the post, the driver of the vehicle stopped and rendered aid to the juvenile and remained at the scene of the incident.

Officers arrived within two minutes of the crash and also began rending aid to the juvenile, who was trapped beneath the truck, by applying a tourniquet. The teen was extracted from beneath the truck by Central Fire District of Santa Cruz County and was transported in serious but stable condition by a helicopter to a regional trauma center.

Capitola Police Chief Sarah Ryan told the Sentinel Wednesday that the bicyclist remained in stable condition, but detailed information was limited due to his status as a juvenile.

The driver was not impaired at the time of the collision and cooperated with officers when they arrived, according to the law enforcement statement.

Anyone that witnessed the incident or caught it with camera footage can contact the Capitola Police Department at 831-475-4242.
