A fresh wave of layoffs jolted the Bay Area during March as employers slashed well over 600 jobs in the region, affecting workers in the tech, life sciences, hotel and retail industries.
The job cuts affected workers for SK hynix, AppLovin, onsemi, Cruise, Niantic, Cepheid, Cargo Therapeutics, Sutro Biopharma, JCPenney and the Waterfront Hotel, according to official WARN notices the companies filed with state labor officials in March.

Employees working at sites in San Jose, Oakland, Fremont, Newark, San Francisco, San Carlos, San Bruno, South San Francisco, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara were affected by the recent wave of layoffs.

All told, employers in the tech, life sciences, hotel and retail sectors revealed decisions during March to chop 684 jobs in the Bay Area, according to the WARN notices the companies sent to the state Employment Development Department.
Here are some of the details of the latest rounds of job cuts affecting Bay Area workers in the four sectors, as based on the WARN notices posted by the state EDD:
— SK Hynix, a chip company, 33 job cuts in San Jose. The layoffs are planned for May 19.
— AppLovin, a software firm, 97 layoffs in Palo Alto. The downsizing occurred on March 21.
— Niantic, a mobile app company, 68 staff cuts in San Francisco. The reductions are scheduled for May 20.
— onsemi, a semiconductor firm, 51 layoffs in San Jose. The cuts are planned for May 11.
— Cruise, an autonomous vehicle company, 34 staff cuts affecting workers in San Francisco and Sunnyvale. The job cuts are scheduled for multiple dates in late April and in May.
— Cepheid, a medical devices and life sciences firm, 113 job cuts affecting workers in Fremont, Newark, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara. The downsizing is planned for May 12.
— Cargo Therapeutics, 84 layoffs in San Carlos. The biotech company is halting development and is closing its San Carlos site. The downsizing is planned for May 19.
— Sutro Biopharma, 65 staff cuts in San Carlos and South San Francisco. The reductions are planned for Aug. 1.
— JCPenney is closing its San Bruno store and is cutting 82 jobs. The layoffs are scheduled for May 17.
— Waterfront Hotel has closed its doors in Oakland’s Jack London Square and eliminated 57 jobs. The shutdown and staff reductions occurred March 18.
In all instances, the employers told the state EDD in the WARN notices that the layoffs were permanent.
