Woman survives vehicle collision with train in Oakland

OAKLAND — A San Francisco woman survived after her car was struck Monday morning by an Amtrak train in the Fruitvale district, authorities said.

The extent of her injuries was not immediately known, but she was able to talk with doctors at a hospital, where she was listed in stable condition, authorities said. Her age was not available.

The collision happened about 6:14 a.m. Monday at the railroad crossing at 37th Avenue and East 9th Street.

The circumstances of why her car was on the tracks was under investigation. She was the only occupant of the vehicle.

The vehicle was struck by an Amtrak Capitol Corridor train enroute from Sacramento to San Jose. None of the 11 crew or passengers on board were injured. Service was delayed for almost two hours and the passengers were transferred to another train, officials said.

The woman was treated at the scene by paramedics before being transported to a hospital.

The collision remains under investigation by Amtrak and Oakland police.

There have been other collisions involving Amtrak trains at the crossing, including one in October 2023, which killed a 41-year-old man walking on the tracks.
