The coroner’s bureau is in the process of confirming her name and it will not be released until her family is notified.

The fire started around 4:50 p.m. Friday inside a ground-floor apartment on Derby Street near Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

Firefighters entered the burning home and found the woman unconscious and badly burned in the room where they believe the fire had started. Fire officials have not said what room it was.

She was brought outside where paramedics began life saving measures before she was taken by ambulance to a hospital where she later died.

No other injuries were reported, but two residents were displaced. The Red Cross was called to assist them.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

There have been three fatal fires so far this year in Berkeley. There were none last year.

Staff writer Jason Green contributed to this report. Check back for updates.
