BERKELEY — Berkeley Police shot a man allegedly armed with a firearm outside an apartment Sunday morning after he threatened to shoot officers, police said.
Police were dispatched around 6:50 a.m. Sunday to a possible domestic violence incident after a woman was reported screaming for help inside a residence in the 1700 block of University Avenue, according to Berkeley police spokeswoman Jessica Perry.
The man “made threats to shoot officers and exited an apartment with a firearm,” Perry said. After a standoff and negotiations, the man again exited the apartment with a firearm, and police shot him, Perry said.
He was transported to a hospital in critical condition, according to Perry.
The investigation is ongoing, and police asked the public Sunday to avoid the area around University and McGee avenues.
The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave, per departmental protocol, Perry said.
The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office is also conducting an investigation into the incident, Perry said.
