Cementing a legacy

Hear how Silicon Valley’s history was set in stone during a Zoom presentation hosted by the Saratoga Historical Foundation on April 23.

Ted Atlas, a San Jose native who retired from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department, will be speaking about the history of the Kaiser Permanente Quarry and cement plant in Cupertino as part of the foundation’s lecture series.

“That’s the intention: to tell these stories and make them accessible,” said Mayor Belal Aftab.

Atlas plans to cover how Kaiser Permanente founder Henry Kaiser started his shipbuilding business and cement plant then went on to operate the only plant in the western U.S. that could make aluminum foil. The quarry, now known as Lehigh Hanson, has been closed since November 2022.

The Zoom meeting information can be found on https://saratogahistory.com/. The lecture is scheduled for 7 p.m.
