Gov. Newsom offers $50k to anyone who tells on would-be cop assassin

SACRAMENTO — Gov. Gavin Newsom is offering $50,000 to anyone who turns in the person who shot and wounded a Hillsborough police officer last February, his office announced Friday.

Since the Feb. 22 broad daylight shooting, police have “exhausted all investigative leads” in seeking the identity of a person who shot the officer in an apparent targeted murder attempt, a news release says. The officer was treated at a San Francisco hospital and released.

The officer returned fire and the suspect was later seen running from the area. The ambush-style shooting occurred at the Hillsborough Police Department at 1600 Floribunda Avenue, authorities said.

Police have released a sketch of the suspect and interviewed witnesses, but have yet to learn the person’s identity. They’re now hoping the $50,000 incentive will shake loose a valuable tip.

Anyone who knows the suspect and wants to tell on him can contact Corporal Josh Wang at 650-375-7470. Anonymous tips can be emailed to the Hillsborough Police Department at [email protected].

Under state law, police agencies can ask the governor to offer rewards in unsolved cases where detectives have exhausted all investigative leads.

On Friday, the governor’s office also offered rewards of $50,000 a piece for information leading to arrests in murder cases in Petaluma, La Mesa and Lemoore. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office asked for help in solving the cold case death of 12-year-old Georgia Moses, who was found dead next to Highway 101 in Petaluma on Aug. 22, 1997.
