Notable tributes to Pope Francis from the Bay Area, California and beyond

Notable tributes to Pope Francis from the Bay Area, California and beyond

Monday’s passing of Pope Francis a day after celebrating Easter at the Vatican drew tributes from around the world, including from the Bay Area.

Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone, Archdiocese of San Francisco

“Pope Francis called on us all to give more, sacrifice more, and care more about the poorest and most vulnerable, from the tiny infant in the womb, to the elderly and infirm, to the migrant and the refugee. Let us take inspiration from his words and example and put that inspiration into action. That is the greatest tribute we could give to him.”

Bishop Oscar Cantú, Diocese of San Jose

“Pope Francis was a shepherd who led with humility, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the Gospel. He referred to the Church as a field hospital, reaching out to the peripheries, and encouraged us all to encounter each other, especially the poor. His emphasis on mercy, care for creation, and solidarity with the poor has left an indelible mark on the Church and the world.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom

“Jennifer and I join the world in mourning the passing of Pope Francis. He saw God in all His creatures, reminding us of humanity’s obligations towards each other and the world we live in, asking us to ‘care for one another and let us be loving custodians of creation.’”

Rep. Nancy Pelosi

“His Holiness Pope Francis personified our sacred responsibility in the Gospel of Matthew to honor the spark of divinity in the least of our brethren — championing the poor, the worker, the refugee and the immigrant. He reminded us of our inescapable duty to those struggling to escape poverty and persecution in our communities and around the world. Perhaps his most distinctive leadership will be his historic commitment to addressing the climate crisis. In his ground-breaking encyclical, Laudato Si, Pope Francis writes with beauty and clarity, with moral force and fierce urgency to call on all of us to be good stewards of God’s Creation.”

Former President Joe Biden

“As Pope, he was a loving pastor and challenging teacher who reached out to different faiths. He commanded us to fight for peace and protect our planet from a climate crisis. He advocated for the voiceless and powerless. He made all feel welcome and seen by the Church. He promoted equity and an end to poverty and suffering across the globe. And above all, he was a Pope for everyone. He was the People’s Pope – a light of faith, hope, and love.”
