Oakland Fire Department stops shop fire from spreading to church

Oakland Fire Department extinguished a fire at a sewing shop at 670 Ninth St. in downtown Oakland on Sunday, preventing the flames from spreading to two nearby businesses and a church.

The fire department activated 50 firefighters as part of a three-alarm fire call for the blaze, which broke out at 8:39 a.m., because it threatened neighboring buildings on Tenth Street and Corinthian Baptist Church, according to Battalion Chief Frank Tijiboy.

Firefighters brought the fire under control by 9:13 a.m. No occupants were inside the building when the fire erupted, and no firefighters or civilians were harmed in the incident, Tijiboy said. The battalion chief added that the cause of the fire has not yet been identified.

Oakland Fire Department responded to a fire at a sewing shop at 670 Ninth Street Sunday morning. OFD issued a three-alarm fire for the incident, calling upon 50 firefighters to snuff out the blaze before it could spread to neighboring buildings.

“We have the building owner on scene, and they are cooperating with the fire investigators,” Tijiboy said. “Right now, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.”
