Mechem, a former member of Stanford University’s music faculty whose 100th birthday is Aug. 16, is known for his first opera, “Tartuffe.” He is currently working on an operatic adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.” Fittingly, his choral works include “Birthdays: Round Numbers,” a suite of songs celebrating the passing decades, from ages 10 to 70.

Tickets are $8-$50 at https://www.scc.org/may-celebrating-kirke-mechem.html. Those under age 18 are admitted free.

Universal donors needed

During National Trauma Awareness Month in May, nonprofit blood services provider Vitalant will enter donors to win one of two vacation packages, including four tickets to Universal Epic Universe theme park at Universal Orlando Resort, travel vouchers for airfare and hotel accommodations, and a $2,500 prepaid gift card.

Donors of every blood type play a critical role in helping patients. Type O donations are especially needed as that is the most transfused blood type. In particular, O negative blood is often called the universal blood type because people of any blood type can receive it.

Vitalant is holding blood drives Friday, May 2, 10  a.m.- 1:45 p.m., at El Camino YMCA in Mountain View and Sunday, May 11, 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m., at Etz Chaymin in Palo Alto. To make an appointment, visit vitalant.org or call 877-258-4825.
