CHP: Pregnant San Jose woman dies after I-280 crash

SAN JOSE — A pregnant woman died following a car crash on Interstate 280 on Thursday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Two children who were also riding with the woman were not injured in the collision, which was reported in the southbound lanes approaching Bird Avenue, the CHP said in a Friday news release.

The CHP said that just after 7:30 p.m. a 25-year-old San Jose woman was driving a green Honda Civic when, for a reason still under investigation, she cut across the freeway and hit a Ford pickup truck.

The driver was thrown from her car and suffered serious injuries; she was rushed to nearby Valley Medical Center. She and her unborn child died at the hospital, the CHP said. Her name was not publicly released pending her formal identification and notification of next of kin by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.

Two children, one about 3 years old and the other about 6 years old, were passengers in the Civic and did not appear to be injured, though they were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

A cause for the crash, and whether the driver was impaired by drugs or alcohol, were not known as of Friday morning, the CHP said. No other injuries were reported.

Anyone with information about the Thursday collision can contact the CHP San Jose area field office at 408-961-0900.
