SAN JOSE — Dozens of homes could sprout on a San Jose site in the city’s Alviso district, a property that now accommodates a hodgepodge of residences, industrial uses and commercial activity.

The development site has addresses of 1563 to 1641 El Dorado Street and is near the site of Vahl’s Restaurant in north San Jose.

The proposal envisions the development of 59 townhomes on a 3.1-acre site whose boundaries include El Dorado Street, Moffat Street and Gold Street.

San Jose’s Alviso district appears to be turning into something of a hotbed for development proposals of late.

A short distance away from this site, one group has proposed the development of a massive data center near the corner of North First Street and Liberty Street.

Also nearby is the site of an affordable housing project of 780 residences at 7 Top Golf Drive that could be fast-tracked through the San Jose review process via a “builder’s remedy” gambit.

As for the housing development on El Dorado Street, the project would cause the demolition of residential, commercial and industrial structures on the site to clear the way for the 59 townhomes.

The development site consists of six parcels and is owned by two different family trusts. Each of the two trusts owns three of the six parcels.

One ownership group is a trust whose trustee is Betty J. Brown of Los Altos. The other group is a trust whose trustee is Sandra Anderson of Discovery Bay, according to Santa Clara County Assessment Records.

HMH Engineers filed the townhomes proposal with San Jose city planners. It wasn’t immediately clear who would develop the project if the city approves the housing project.
