Man charged in Oakland shooting that left one dead, one wounded

OAKLAND — A man with five prior felony convictions has been charged in a Dimond district shooting early Thursday that left one man dead and another man wounded, according to authorities and court records.

Rolls Royce Mitchell, 45, of Oakland, was charged Friday with murder, attempted murder, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition by a prohibited person.

He is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail pending arraignment Monday.

He is charged in the fatal shooting of Rickie Campbell, 49, and the wounding of another 49-year-old man. Police have said the two men shot knew each other but have not said if Mitchell knew them.

The shooting, in which some 15 rounds were fired, happened about 12:41 a.m. Thursday outside in the 3100 block of MacArthur Boulevard between Midvale and 35th avenues. Campbell died later at a hospital.

The other wounded man got his own transportation to a hospital. His condition was not available.

The two men shot had been at a club in the area prior to the shooting, authorities said. A motive for the shooting has not yet been released.

Mitchell fled the scene before police could respond. According to court documents, he was identified as the alleged shooter through “witness statements, follow-up search warrants, surveillance footage” and other evidence. He was arrested in Oakland about 6 a.m. Thursday.

According to court documents Mitchell has five prior felony convictions in Alameda County between February 1999 and and August 2011. One conviction was for assault with a deadly weapon and the others were drug-related. He was placed on probation for all of them, the records say.
