Blossom Festival flourishes for another year in Saratoga

Food, arts and entertainment will be in bloom at the Blossom Festival in Saratoga on May 17.

The event has historical significance for the city. It was first celebrated in 1900 and ran for 41 years. The Saratoga Historical Foundation picked up the tradition 10 years ago and has continued to run it.

The event will feature antique cars, food trucks and artisan merchandise.such as handmade pillows, bath items, jewelry, glassware and handmade cards. Bands like Back Pages and Silicon Valley Gulch Jazz will be playing music across a variety of genres.

Master gardeners, beekeepers and representatives from the Santa Clara County Fire Safety Department and the Wildlife Center will be there to meet visitors. There will also be a tai chi group practicing exercise and meditation, as well as a petting zoo for children.

Two historical films will be shown in the Saratoga Library. A documentary about Hakone Gardens will be shown at 10:30 a.m. in the Maple room, covering the gardens’ history, spanning from its initial inspiration through the multiple private ownerships before the city purchased it as a public garden. At 1:30 p.m., the library will screen “Heart’s Delight,” a film juxtaposing fruit trees’ yearly cycle from dormancy through harvest with the growth of Messina Orchard. Marilyn Messina will also be there to discuss 20th-century life on her family’s orchards. The orchard is recognized in the National Register of Historic Places for its agricultural and architectural significance.

The festival will be held in the Heritage Orchard and Civic Center Courtyard at 13777 Fruitvale Ave. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is free admission and free parking. Extra parking is located at West Valley College parking lot 4.
