Authorities refocus hunt for missing Peninsula hiker

PORTOLA VALLEY – The hunt for a woman who went missing in the Windy Hill Open Space Preserve more than two weeks ago will continue this weekend with nearly 100 search and rescue personnel set to join the effort, according to authorities.

Margaret “Elaine” McKinley, 79, of Redwood City, was last seen hiking along the Lost Trail in the Windy Hill Open Space Preserve around noon Thursday, May 1, 2025, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. (San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office) (San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office)

Margaret “Elaine” McKinley, 79, of Redwood City, was first reported missing on May 1 after hiking along the Lost Trail.

On Saturday and Sunday, teams will “focus on intensively re-searching” the area where McKinley went missing, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

More than 600 search and rescue personnel have looked for McKinley since the beginning of the month.

“Despite exhaustive efforts and utilizing all available resources, there have been no confirmed sightings of Elaine,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release Friday.

Last week, the search shifted into a “limited continuous phase,” meaning it will continue until McKinley is found, but with scaled down resources, according to authorities.

McKinley, who has dementia, was last seen wearing a red jacket and black pants.
