CHP: Man dies after jumping off Highway 101 overpass and is struck by a vehicle

SAN JOSE — A man died Monday morning after he jumped from a Highway 101 overpass onto the southbound lanes of traffic and was struck by a vehicle,  the California Highway Patrol said.

Authorities were trying to identify the man.

CHP Officer Ross Lee said the man jumped from the Oakland Road overpass onto the southbound lanes of the highway about 4:48 a.m. Monday.  He was then struck by a vehicle that remained at the scene.

The man who jumped was pronounced dead at the scene.

.All southbound lanes remained closed at 7:45 a.m. while officers investigated what happened. The CHP said it hoped to be able to reopen the lanes by 8 a.m.

Anyone with information about the man or who witnessed what happened is asked to call the CHP San Jose office at 408-961-0900.
