New Courtyard by Marriott in Pittsburg expected to boost local economy

PITTSBURG — A new Courtyard by Marriott in Pittsburg is a major step forward in the city’s efforts to attract tourism and economic development, according to city leaders.

Pittsburg Mayor Jelani Killings said the hotel will help support the local economy by driving traffic to the city’s restaurants and small businesses.

It will also help the emerging sports tourism industry that the city has planned with the construction of Pittsburg Premier Fields, the city’s first multipurpose sports site, and the Dream Courts project, a 45,000-square-foot multicourt sports complex for basketball and volleyball.

Killings said the hotel project was years in the making and involved “a lot of work” between the city and the developer, Stay Cal Pittsburg LLC.

“But here we are, in 2025, the doors are open to this beautiful facility that is now serving here in this region,” said Killings at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday. “People who are driving by Highway 4, seeing Courtyard by Marriott in Pittsburg is really a staple in terms of what the city is doing to turn the corner on economic development.”

The hotel, located on Center Drive, has 117 rooms and is less than a quarter mile from the Pittsburg Center BART Station.

It was completed at a cost of over $30 million. The city also provided about $4.2 million in financial assistance to help kickstart the project.

Pittsburg’s Community and Economic Development Director Jordan Davis said the assistance included $1.5 million to purchase the property, $1 million in permit fees issued as a loan, and $1.7 million in construction funding.

Additionally, the city also provided a $600,000 grant from the federal American Rescue Plan Act, which does not require repayment. All loaned amounts carry market-rate interest and must be repaid over a 30-year term.

“As part of the loan agreement, the developer is required to maintain a certain rating of the hotel. It can’t become an extended stay hotel under the terms of the agreement,” said Davis.

The hotel is expected to serve thousands of guests and generate about $500,000 in transient occupancy tax revenue annually for the city.

Janita Jordan, director of sales at the Courtyard by Marriott in Pittsburg, said the hotel, which opened on March 15, offers amenities like a fitness center, on-site laundry, full bars, and restaurants.

Since its opening, the hotel has seen a minimum occupancy rate of 60% and higher, with weekends being its busiest period.

“We have a lot of corporate travelers and do a lot of groups, so it’s off to a really good start,” said Jordan.

Apart from the Courtyard by Marriott hotel, Pittsburg will also see another Hilton hotel on Loveridge Road. The 115-room Home2Suites will sit on a 2-acre site and is across from Motel 6, which has now been converted as part of California’s Homekey program to help those experiencing homelessness.
