Los Gatos High School therapist receives statewide recognition

School Employee of the Year

The lead therapist at Los Gatos High School was honored as a California Classified School Employee of the Year.

In March, Amrita Vu was named the Santa Clara County Office of Education’s Classified School Employee of the Year in the Health and Student Services category before going on to represent Santa Clara County in the state competition. Vu was one of nine recipients out of over 135 nominations statewide, highlighting her service, leadership and impact on students.

“Amrita continues to make a tremendous difference in the lives of our students,” Acting Superintendent Heath Rocha said in a release. “Her leadership, compassion and advocacy serve as a model for how critical mental health and wellness professionals are in our schools.”

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond will recognize Vu and other winners at a luncheon in Sacramento later this month.

Vu also won a 2024 Santa Clara County Behavioral Health Community Heroes Award in the Educator category, which recognizes professionals who exceeded expectations in providing behavioral health support. Vu was hired to help build Los Gatos High School’s Wellness Center and mental health program. She created a program that offers students “a safe, supportive environment during times of stress or crisis.”

Opera lectures

The San Jose Opera Guild will be hosting a lecture on Mozart’s “Indomeneo” on June 9 at the Terraces of Los Gatos as part of the San Francisco Opera’s lecture series, which is co-sponsored by the San Jose Opera Guild and the San Francisco Opera Guild.

“Indomeneo” is about a king who must choose between fulfilling his promise to the god Neptune and his love for his family. The lecture will be led by Rebecca Plack, professor of opera studies and music history at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Admission is free for San Jose Opera Guild members and residents of The Terraces and $10 for the general public. Parking is available at the presbyterian church  next to The Terraces.
