Bay Area News Group girls athlete of the week: Cynthia Wang, Mitty

Archbishop Mitty badminton player Cynthia Wang is the Bay Area News Group’s girls high school athlete of the week for May 12-17.

In online voting that ended at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Wang had 50.24% of the vote. Independence softball player Ava Sanchez was second at 42.87% and Los Altos gymnast Libby Lyon was third.

Congratulations to all the candidates for this week’s recognition.

Wang qualified for NorCals this weekend at Independence High. In her high school debut season, she has a 19-2 record, including 10-0 in the regular season. She and her sister, Laila, were seeded No. 1 at their league tournament in doubles and finished fifth at CCS this past weekend.

To nominate an athlete for next week’s poll, email [email protected] by Monday at 11 a.m. Please include stats and team results.

Votes by email do not count. Only votes submitted through the online poll on the Mercury News and East Bay Times websites will count.

Winners are announced each Friday on the Mercury News and East Bay Times websites and in the print edition of the Mercury News and EB Times sports sections.
