Bay FC settles for 2-2 draw after Houston scores in final minutes

Bay FC’s Penelope Hocking and Rachel Hill scored second-half goals three minutes apart but Bay had to settle for a 2-2 draw when Houston scored with two minutes left on Saturday night.

It was Bay FC’s second heartbreaker in its last three weeks.

Hocking scored in her third straight match when she tied the match at the 53rd minute at Shell Energy Stadium. Shortly thereafter, Bay FC (3-2-4) had its first lead when Hill scored her first goal of the season on a right-footer from the center of the box off an assist by Racheal Kundananji.

With a victory in sight, though, Houston (3-1-5) tied the contest with just two minutes remaining when Messiah Bright left-footed a shot from the middle of the box into the net, sending each side home with a point.

“It was a good point away from home, one that hurt a little bit since we were up 2-1 in the second half. But it showed a lot of character from our team being down 1-0 at halftime, it’s the first time this season we’ve been able to come back and come out with at least a point,” said Bay FC coach Albertin Montoya. “We came out in the second half with the right mentality, created opportunities, made some changes that allowed us to get forward a little bit more. Overall, I thought we played some really good football.”

Coming off a shutout win over Angel FC, Bay FC has now earned points in back-to-back matches after a recent three match winless streak.

Abby Dahlkemper reached a career milestone with her start and appearance in Saturday’s match. The contest marked the 2017 NWSL Defender of the Year and Menlo Park native’s 150th career regular season game played, making her the 42nd player in league history to reach the milestone.

Bay FC resumes National Women’s Soccer League play on Saturday, June 7 when it faces Portland at PayPal Park.
