How a network connectivity issue caused BART to fully shut down for 5 hours

The transit agency’s green line re-opened for the first time since it was shut down on May 20 after a fire near the San Leandro station. The green line offers train service between the Lake Merritt, Berryessa and Dublin stations.

Damage to the train tracks from the fire prevented the line from being used.

BART officials said repairs to the track have been ongoing since last week’s blaze, and that around-the-clock work over the weekend got the line ready for the commute.

Commuting on the transit has been far from routine in recent weeks. BART also suffered a shutdown to its entire system for more than five hours on May 9 after a network connectivity issue with the agency’s computer system prevented visibility of trains in the operation control system.

BART serves about 170,000 passengers on a typical weekday.
