Pleasanton man to serve 11-year sentence in Oakland homicide

OAKLAND — A Pleasanton man has agreed to serve an 11-year prison sentence for killing a man in 2021, allegedly during an argument over a woman, court records show.

Steven Eubanks, 33, pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of 50-year-old Dwight Burton. Prosecutors said in court filings that Eubanks, Burton, and several others were involved in the argument, before Eubanks shot and killed Burton at around noon on May 26, 2021 at the 3200 block of 35th Avenue in Oakland.

In exchange for Eubanks’ plea, prosecutors dropped a murder charge against him.

Police arrested Eubanks based on a description of a Lexus he was driving, which eyewitnesses identified as belonging to the shooter. Eubanks reportedly told police the car actually belonged to a relative, Darryon Williams, who at the time was facing pending charges of murdering a man in Discovery Bay and then shooting at first responders.

Williams ended up agreeing to a 37-year prison term in a plea deal, court records show.

Eubanks is set to be formally sentenced on Monday, court records show.
