Los Gatos resident group outlines vision for community center

Community center designs

Two new drawings for the Los Gatos Community Center were unveiled on June 1 at The Terraces of Los Gatos.

The drawings conceptualize the community center as either one story or two stories. Both designs feature large glass doors and windows and tall beams to support awnings and infrastructure. Los Gatos Thrives, a group of residents organized in 2023 to advance plans for a community center, said the two-story building may work in downtown, or they could build a one-story building where more space is available.

Award-winning project

The Los Gatos Creek Trailhead Connector was chosen as Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association of Silicon Valley.

The project connects the Los Gatos Creek Trail to and from Highway 9. It was a priority project to support bicycle and pedestrian movement and opened in April. The award was for transportation projects between $5 million and $25 million.

Town Parks and Public Works Director Nicolle Burnham, Town Special Project Manager Sean Rose and representatives from the Biggs Cardoza Associates design team and Granite Construction accepted the award on May 21.

Adopt a plot

The Los Gatos High School Summer Community Gardening Program will have garden plots available for people to choose and grow their own plants.

The free program starts on June 7 and ends in August. Participants can “adopt” a 5-by-10-foot plot from a graduating senior and continue to grow and harvest the existing plants or replace them with their own. Each plot comes with an individual drip irrigation spigot and an online drip irrigation tutorial for occasional gardeners who want to keep their plants watered.

The program helps the school’s agroecology program maintain the garden.  Some plots already have tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, sunflowers, strawberries, pumpkins and some leafy greens. Additional plants can be started at home and transplanted to a plot. Next year’s students can also plan to keep a few plants to harvest by early September during non-school hours.
