East San Jose to get a real taste of Viva CalleSJ this weekend

East San Jose to get a real taste of Viva CalleSJ this weekend

Viva CalleSJ is coming to East San Jose in a big way this weekend, with the open-streets event closing North White Road to motor vehicles and making room for cyclists, strollers and skaters Sunday.

The 5-mile route, “El Este: From the Library to the Lake,” includes activity hubs at the end points of the Berryessa Library and Lake Cunningham Regional Park, as well as another at Alum Rock Village. The hubs will include food trucks, live entertainment, water stations, restrooms and free minor bike repairs from Community Cycles.

While previous Viva Calle events have included Alum Rock and Lake Cunningham park, this is the first one to take place entirely in East San Jose and the first that doesn’t through downtown San Jose in any way.

Brian Clampitt, parks manager for San Jose’s department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services, said as Viva Calle celebrates 10 years, the program is excited to explore new ground, though that does also mean ensuring residents in the area who have never before had to deal with Viva Calle’s road closures know what to expect.

“Every route tells a new story, and this one opens the door to neighborhoods that haven’t yet had the chance to experience Viva CalleSJ in their own front yard,” Clampitt said. “We know that reaching new communities comes with unique challenges in making sure residents feel informed and comfortable with how Viva CalleSJ works. But on the flipside, it also creates powerful opportunities to build new connections, promote active living, and celebrate San Jose’s diversity in a new area — one street at a time.”

Viva Calle takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and there will be vehicle crossings where White Road intersects with Penitencia Creek Road, McKee Road, Story Road and Ocala Avenue. You can get more information at www.vivacallejs.org.

MUSICAL NOTES: This weekend, Symphony San Jose is sounding the final notes on a really successful season with “España,” a season-finale that journeys through the Iberian Peninsula with José Luis Gomez conducting the orchestra and Rafael Aguirre as a featured guitar soloist. It would be worth your while to arrive to the concerts — 7:30 p.m. Saturday or 2:30 p.m. Sunday — early, as there will be a flamenco dance performance in the California’s courtyard.

Symphony San Jose also is wrapping up its season with good news, too. The board of directors has signed Executive Artistic Director Robert Massey to a contract extension through the 2027-28 season. “We are absolutely thrilled with the momentum Robert and his team have created,” said Board Chair Nancy Johnson, pointing to increases in both subscriptions and single-ticket sales, new education programs and a recent $1 million bequest that is the second-largest gift in the institution’s history.

Speaking of donations, the Brandenburg Family Foundation has a $100,000 matching gift campaign that ends Sunday, which would have been the 95th birthday of Lee Brandenburg, who died in 2017. He and his wife, Diane Brandenburg, were longtime supporters of the symphony and Diane has kept that tradition going. I’m told she’s been instrumental in supporting youth initiatives including the annual partnership with New Ballet on “The Nutcracker.” Go to www.symphonysanjose.org for details.

VROOM VROOM: The Santa Clara Valley Model T Ford Club has its 54th annual Endurance Run and Lowland Tour taking place Sunday, with historic “Speedsters” on a timed trek through mountain and coastal communities including Boulder Creek, Ben Lomond, Santa Cruz, Pescadero and La Honda. The run will start at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Palo Alto on Sunday morning, where there will be a Veterans Appreciation Car Show on display with vintage autos from the Santa Clara Valley Model T Ford Club and others. The drivers should make their way back to Palo Alto around 3:30 p.m.

And if you want to get into an automotive state of mind early, a historic car show is happening in downtown Campbell on Saturday. The third annual show, which runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., will take place on Campbell Avenue.
