LIVERMORE — Livermore City Attorney Jason Alcala announced his retirement after serving more than two decades in the Tri-Valley city, known for its small-town charm and sprawling, historic wine country.

“Livermore is a special place. It has been a privilege serving the Livermore community,” Alcala said in a statement Friday. “I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such extraordinary council members, staff and community members who are truly committed to the city’s quality of life and to doing the right thing – even when it is hard.”

Alcala has served as the city’s top legal expert since 2014, and his last day will be Aug. 22, according to officials. He was first hired in 2004 as an assistant city attorney, when the city had about 10,000 less residents compared to today’s population of roughly 86,000. He helped oversee major city projects, such as the redevelopment of Livermore’s downtown and reinvestment into the Bankhead Theater, the Isabel Avenue and Interstate 580 interchange, a 2019 cyberattack on the city and the coronavirus pandemic, according to a news release.

A lawyer with 25 years of legal experience, Alcala is an alumnus from the University of Notre Dame and the University of Southern California’s Gould School of Law. He also held previous positions in the cities of Chino, Coachella and Thousand Oaks, the release said.

“I believe I was the right attorney at the right time to help Livermore,” Alcala said.

The city paid Alcala a salary of $315,269, plus benefits in 2024, according to his contract.

“I truly appreciate Jason’s dedication to Livermore,” Mayor John Marchand said in a statement. “His tireless work has helped the City succeed where others might falter.”

Livermore officials have started recruiting Alcala’s successor but have not yet named a new appointment.
