SAN JOSE — San Jose Sharks center Macklin Celebrini will not be able to celebrate his upcoming birthday with the Calder Trophy.
Celebrini finished third in Calder Trophy voting as the NHL’s top rookie this past season behind winner Lane Hutson of the Montreal Canadiens and Calgary Flames goalie Dustin Wolf, the league announced Tuesday.
Members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association vote on the award.
Hutson received first-place votes on 165 of the 191 ballots submitted and had 1,832 voting points. Wolf, a Gilroy native, had 15 first-place votes and was second in voting with 1,169 points. Celebrini earned 11 first-place votes and 1,104 points.
Sharks forward Will Smith, who had 45 points in 74 games this season, was sixth in voting.
Celebrini, who turns 19 on Friday, led the Sharks with 63 points in 70 games this season and all NHL rookies in points per game. He also led all Sharks forwards still with the team in average time on ice (19:47).
Hutson, Celebrini’s former teammate at Boston University, led all rookies with 66 points in 82 games. That made him the third-highest scoring player on a Canadiens team that made a 15-point jump in the standings and advanced to the playoffs for the first time since 2021.
Hutson was the fourth defenseman since 1943-44 to lead rookies in scoring, joining Bobby Orr (41 in 1966-67), Brian Leetch (71 in 1988-89) and Quinn Hughes (53 in 2019-20). His 60 assists matched Larry Murphy for the most by a rookie defenseman in league history.
Wolf, too, almost led the Flames to the playoffs as he started 53 games and went 29-16-8 with three shutouts and a .910 save percentage.
Celebrini was the fourth Sharks player to be named a finalist for the Calder Trophy. Goalie Evgeni Nabokov won the award after the 2000-01 season, and defenseman Brad Stuart (1999-2000) and center Logan Couture (2010-11) were runners-up.
