SF Giants’ Bailey joins Chapman on injured list with neck strain

A day after third baseman Matt Chapman landed on the injured list due to right-hand inflammation, the Giants placed catcher Patrick Bailey on the 10-day IL with a neck strain.

Bailey, 26, was in Tuesday’s starting lineup in Colorado against the Rockies before being scratched due to the neck issue. Backup catcher Andrew Knizner, who joined the Giants last Wednesday, started in Bailey’s place.

In a corresponding move, the Giants selected the contract of catcher Logan Porter and designated infielder Oslevis Basabe for assignment.

Despite his offensive struggles, Bailey has remained one of baseball’s best defensive catchers this season, ranking in the 98th percentile of framing and pop time. Bailey has also thrown out 14 of 34 runners attempting to steal.

Knizner went 0-for-3 on Tuesday but drew a walk in the ninth inning as the Giants completed a four-run comeback to win 6-5 over Colorado. It was their sixth straight win, all by one run.

The 30-year-old Knizner will take Bailey’s place as the starting catcher. Knizner has played in parts of seven major league seasons, spending five years backing up Yadier Molina with the St. Louis Cardinals. Defensively, Knizner has recorded -21 defensive runs saved over 275 games as a catcher.

Porter, 29, has only played 11 career games in the majors, all with the Kansas City Royals in 2023. Over 40 games with Triple-A Sacramento, Porter had a .237 batting average with two homers.
