Oakland investigators seeking help in years-old homicides

OAKLAND — Homicide investigators released the mug shot of one suspect and still images of four others as they appealed the public for help solving years-old violent deaths in the city.

On Tuesday, police released a mug shot of Brandon Bernard Bell, the person they called the only suspect in the Feb. 24, 2023, shooting of Shamieka Mabery in the 6900 block of International Boulevard. Bell, 39, left the shooting scene on foot and hasn’t been seen by authorities since then. They have issued a warrant for his arrest.

Last week, police released several pictures that they said shows at least four suspects in the shooting death of 24-year-old Bert Brigham III. That shooting happened on July 18, 2021, in the 1900 block of Foothill Boulevard. Brigham died four days later.

The cars shown in the photos released in the Brigham investigation show a white Kia Optima, a blue Toyota Camry and a dark Honda Accord.

Police said Brigham was shot about 10:04 p.m. while hanging out with a group of people. They said he had residences in Oakland and Antioch.

Maybery’s shooting came outside Mike’s Bong Shop. Surveillance footage showed Bell walk up to Maybery’s car and block its way, then start an argument with her, police said. During the argument, he pulled out a gun and fired at her repeatedly at close range, authorities said.

“She was a daughter, a friend, a neighbor, a pet parent and a woman full of dreams,” Maybery’s family said in a statement police released for them Tuesday. “Shamieka didn’t come from wealth or privilege. She was a Black woman from the projects of San Francisco. But her life was no less valuable than any other. We’re asking the public not to forget her. Say her name. Share her story. Help bring justice to a woman who can no longer fight for herself.”

Early in the investigation, police discovered Mabery had obtained a restraining order against Bell over an act of domestic violence that occurred in San Francisco County, authorities said. He was arrested in June 2022 on suspicion of domestic violence and making criminal threats, records show.

Police asked anyone with information on either case to contact them at 510-238-3821.
