Scam alert: Fraudulent parking tickets circulating near Santa Cruz beaches

SANTA CRUZ — Those issued a recent parking ticket by the Santa Cruz Police Department should take a second look at the fine print.

Santa Cruz police investigators said they have received reports that fraudulent citations were issued to parked vehicles near the city’s beach areas Sunday. Everyone that has received a parking ticket in recent days should scrutinize it thoroughly before paying, agency officials advised in a public release.

The scammers printed a QR code on the fraudulent tickets that directed potential victims to a website where payment can be submitted.

As of Sunday, it was unknown how many fake citations have been circulated or how many residents or visitors ended up paying the fake citations.

Those who have identified fake parking tickets are asked to contact the Santa Cruz Parking Office or report it to the Santa Cruz Police Investigations Unit at 831-420-5820.

The validity of a parking ticket can be confirmed by the Santa Cruz Parking Office by calling 831-420-6100.
