49ers plan to practice against two NFL teams ahead of preseason games

SANTA CLARA — A year after abandoning plans for a joint practice with the New Orleans Saints because of injury attrition, the 49ers will scrimmage two teams during training camp and ahead of their respective preseason games.

The 49ers, with additional grass fields recently installed at their Santa Clara facility, will host the Denver Broncos on Aug. 7, two days before hosting them in a 5:30 p.m. preseason opener at Levi’s Stadium.

The following week, the 49ers will practice Aug. 14 against the Raiders at their Henderson, Nevada spread, followed by a Saturday, Aug. 16 preseason game at 1 p.m. at Allegiant Stadium.

Veterans report for 49ers training camp July 22, with rookies allowed to report July 15, according to an NFL release Wednesday. The 49ers have yet to announce their daily camp schedule and what practices, if any, will be open to the public.

Last summer, the injury-riddled 49ers scrubbed a plan to practice with the New Orleans Saints in Orange County prior to their preseason game at Levi’s Stadium.

The Broncos visited 49ers camp in 2017 for a feisty session during Kyle Shanahan’s first camp as 49ers coach. Since then, the 49ers have conducted joint practices away from Santa Clara and instead at the camp sites for the Houston Texans (2018), the Broncos (2019), the Los Angeles Chargers (2022), the Minnesota Vikings (2022), and the Raiders (2023)

The 49ers concluded their two-month offseason program last week with minicamp. After hosting the Chargers in an Aug. 23 preseason finale, the 49ers’ regular-season opener is Sept. 7 at Seattle, followed by a Sept. 14 visit to New Orleans before a Sept. 21 home opener against the Arizona Cardinals.
