SF Giants get Logan Webb a win, avoid sweep thanks to Wilmer Flores’ clutch two-run double

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants avoided a sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Guardians thanks to a clutch hit from the man they’ve looked to all season long.

Trailing by a run after a stellar seven-inning start by Logan Webb, Wilmer Flores put the Giants up in bottom of the seventh, scoring Casey Schmitt and Jung Hoo Lee on a double down the left-field line. That margin held thanks to scoreless innings by Randy Rodriguez and Camilo Doval, and the Giants won 2-1 in front of a sellout crowd of over 40,000 fans at Oracle Park.

Carlos Santana put the Guardians up in the third with a two-out bloop single to left field, scoring Fremont native Steven Kwan, who had three hits while playing at home in the Bay Area.

Webb pitched seven strong innings for the Giants, striking out nine hitters and scattering seven hits while allowing just the one earned run. He lowered his ERA to 2.49, bolstering his case for a second consecutive All-Star selection with the voting deadline approaching.

Webb’s nine strikeouts tied him brought him to 114 this season, tying him with Chris Sale for the second-most in the National League.
