Hundreds of Bay Area tech layoffs jolt TurboTax maker as cuts persist

MOUNTAIN VIEW — TurboTax maker Intuit has revealed plans to chop hundreds of Bay Area jobs and hundreds more in Southern California in a disquieting reminder that the tech sector’s layoffs persist.

Intuit has decided to cut well over 300 jobs in Mountain View and more than 200 jobs in San Diego, according to official WARN notice information that the state Employment Development Department has posted.

During May, tech employers slashed a net total of 3,200 jobs in the Bay Area, according to seasonally adjusted estimated provided by Beacon Economics that were derived from the official EDD report.

The San Francisco-San Mateo region lost 2,400 tech jobs, the East Bay shed 400, and the South Bay lost 200 tech positions.

All told, Intuit disclosed its intentions to ax nearly 600 jobs in California in the coming months.

Here are some details regarding the Intuit layoffs:

— 384 layoffs in Mountain View at the Intuit headquarters complex on Coast Avenue. The layoffs are scheduled to occur on Sept. 9.

— 215 jobs in San Diego. The reductions are slated to happen Sept. 9.

Separately, computer animation movie studio Pixar reported plans to shave four jobs in Emeryville. The Pixar cuts are scheduled for Sept. 20.

Intuit and Pixar both described their planned layoffs as permanent.
