Brentwood breaks ground to kickstart construction of Sand Creek Sports Complex

BRENTWOOD – The city has officially broken ground on the Sand Creek Sports Complex, a project that has been in the making for more than 20 years.

“The Sand Creek Sports Complex underscores Brentwood’s ongoing commitment to community health, youth athletics, and an enhanced quality of life for all residents,” said the city in a press release.

Located on the north side of Sand Creek Road, near Fairview Avenue, the complex will occupy 14.5 acres of city-owned land. The entire project involves multiple phases.

The first phase includes three full-size and multi-use synthetic turf athletic fields with lighting, parking lot improvements, restrooms, a shaded picnic and warm-up area, food truck space, park maintenance and a storage building, and Americans with Disabilities Act compliant pathways and spectator zones. There also will be an artistic team photo area.

The phase is expected to be completed in spring 2027. Other phases will be built based on available funding and long-term planning goals, said the city.

Construction of the first phase is led by Robert A. Bothman Construction under an approved $20.1 million contract.

Design of the complex was developed by Verde Design, Inc., after receiving public input during community workshops and Parks and Recreation Commission meetings.

Brentwood Mayor Susannah Meyer said the complex is more than just having fields and courts.

“It’s about creating a safe, and accessible space where our youth can grow, thrive, and connect,” said Meyer in a press release. “I am thrilled to see this vision become a reality and deeply grateful to the many people who helped make it possible.”

Councilmember Jovita Mendoza shared her excitement and anticipation for the project. Mendoza also noted that one of the three full-size fields will be named after the late Brentwood educator and soccer coach Cecy Martinez, who died in 2023.

“We had many town hall meetings, and the kids from the soccer teams showed up, and they asked for the soccer field, and one named after Cecy,” Mendoza told this news organization.

Mendoza said the sports complex will boost local economic development as residents and others utilize the fields for regional sports tournaments.

“Those coming in for tournaments can walk to the restaurants nearby, there will also be a La Quinta/Hawthorn Suite hotel coming in the future,” she added.

Interim City Manager Darin Gale said beyond attracting visitors and creating economic opportunities, the sports complex will also enhance Brentwood’s reputation as a “destination for families and active lifestyles.”

“It’s a well thought-out investment in both our community and our economy,” said Gale.
