Man following his stolen vehicle from Redwood City is shot multiple times in Oakland

OAKLAND — A 20-year-old man who, with his stepfather, was following his stolen SUV from Redwood City was shot multiple times Friday morning by at least one of the suspects in East Oakland, where the stolen vehicle had been rammed to a stop, authorities said.

The wounded man was in stable condition. His stepfather was not injured.

The violent incident began about 3 a.m. Friday in Redwood City where the two men were awakened by the sound of the younger man’s 2011 Kia Soul being stolen from outside their home, police said.

The two men got into another vehicle and, with the stepfather driving, began following the Kia, authorities said.

The Kia stopped once at a Menlo Park gas station before driving away again with the two men still following, authorities said.

The pursuit went over the Hayward-San Mateo Bridge and onto Interstate 880 before both vehicles exited in Oakland, police said.

It ended about 3:34 a.m. in the 4800 block of Coliseum Way, where the two pursuers used the vehicle they were in to ram the Kia to a stop, authorities said.

The several occupants of the Kia got out and began running away eastbound on Coliseum Way with at least one of them firing shots at the two Redwood City men in the vehicle, police said. It was not clear if the wounded man was still inside that vehicle or was outside when he was shot. He was given emergency first aid at the scene by Oakland police officers before being taken to a hospital.

No suspect information was released and no arrests were announced. Anyone with information may call Oakland police investigators at 510-238-3426.
