Fourth grader passes AP exam
A elementary student in Saratoga scored a 5 on the Advanced Placement Precalculus exam, according to an email from her parent.
Gauri Deshpande is a fourth-grader at Blue Hills Elementary School who has been studying math well beyond her grade level for some time. The AP Precalculus exam is usually taken by high school juniors and seniors, with 81% of test-takers passing with a 3 or higher this year. Deshpande may be one of the youngest people to pass the exam.
Her parent, Omkar Deshpande, said that while not many other kids her age shared her love of math, their daughter persisted, often studying on her own at home.
“That self-motivation is a big part of how she got here,” Omkar Deshpande wrote in an email to this news organization. “She was determined to learn calculus before completing elementary school, and worked towards it.”
Gauri Deshpande is hoping to take the AP Calculus exam as a fifth-grader. She is also interested in art, visiting every U.S. national park and collecting Junior Ranger badges.
