Planned Parenthood to close five Northern CA clinics, including in San Mateo and Gilroy

Planned Parenthood to close five Northern CA clinics, including in San Mateo and Gilroy

President Donald Trump appears to be delivering on his promise to “defund” Planned Parenthood.

On Thursday, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte announced on social media that it will close five clinics in Northern California after recent federal budget cuts eliminated Medicaid reimbursements for clinics that perform abortions.

The closures — affecting facilities in South San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Gilroy and Madera — comes just weeks after Trump signed a federal spending bill that bars Medicaid funding from going to any provider that offers abortion services.

With 35 clinics around California, Mar Monte is the largest Planned Parenthood affiliate in the country. The five centers set to close have served over 22,000 patients in the past year, many of whom are low-income with few alternatives for affordable health care.

The funding cuts targeting Planned Parenthood are part of a broader package of federal cost-cutting measures that Republicans say are aimed at reducing long-term entitlement spending. Health policy analysts, however, have warned the cuts could destabilize the nation’s safety-net health system, especially in underserved areas that rely heavily on federally subsidized care.

In June, Planned Parenthood warned that under the “big, beautiful bill,” the organization could be forced to close up to 200 clinics. Yesterday, a Planned Parenthood in Tyler, Texas announced it would close. A day before that, Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region said it would close two of its clinics. And even before the “big, beautiful bill” passed, Planned Parenthood affiliates said they would close four clinics each in Michigan, Iowa, and Minnesota.
