Bay Area temperatures are about about to rise a little higher

Bay Area temperatures are about about to rise a little higher

The longest stretch of high heat that the Bay Area has experienced since the summer began is about to take hold on the region, according to the National Weather Service.

The thing about it is that the heat will be only moderately high.

For the Bay Area, it’s been a July to chill. Why has it happened and does it mean anything?

“The interior areas have the greatest chance to reach the 90s,” NWS meteorologist Roger Gass said. “We anticipate low 90s in places like Livermore and Concord, and 70s to low 80s in areas of the South Bay and closer to the water. It’s probably peaking on Wednesday with a slight cooldown Thursday and then another build into early next week.”

The thermometer’s ascent has been a rare thing during a summer that the weather service said has run far cooler than normal. The Bay Area endured brief heat-ups in June and July but neither took hold for more than two or three days.

Thus, the expected longer length of this one is expected to bring a bit of danger despite temperatures that are cooler than the hottest heat waves. The weather service issued a moderate heat risk for the interior East Bay and South Bay beginning Wednesday and running through Sunday.

“This level of heat affects most individuals sensitive to heat, especially those without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration,” the weather service wrote on social media while emphasizing that people should stay hydrated, take frequent breaks if working outdoors, and check the backseat of cars for kids or pets.

The heat will build as a high pressure bubble takes hold over the desert in the southwest of Arizona and New Mexico, Gass said.

The highest temperatures forecast by the weather service were projected to be 93 on Wednesday in Concord, followed by a 5-degree cooldown on Thursday and a high of 95 on Friday. In Livermore, generally Alameda County’s hottest place, the high temperature is expected to be 91 on Wednesday, 87 on Thursday and 96 on Friday. San Jose is predicted to reach 85 on Wednesday and 88 on Friday.

Closer to the water, temperatures are likely to reach 75 in Oakland on Wednesday and 76 on Friday, while hitting 76 in San Mateo on Wednesday and 78 on Friday

“Those temperatures Friday should persist through Saturday and Sunday and maybe even into Monday,” Gass said.

The conditions that have created steady 8-10 mph wind breezes with gusts of at least 20 mph also are expected to continue through Friday, he said, with the wind will blowing heaviest in the afternoon and evening.

Thus, elevated fire concerns in the region also are expected to continue, but they fall well short of the conditions that bring out red-flag fire danger.

“It’s not out of the question, but largely the overall threat is pretty low,” Gass said. “Any grass fires that get going can become a problem if they get into thicker vegetation, but that’s always the case.”
