Menlo Park’s Peter Littlefield, Santa Clara’s Gillian Staudt win titles at 2025 Tri Santa Cruz

Menlo Park’s Peter Littlefield, 39, and Santa Clara’s Gillian Staudt, 34, won titles at 2025 Tri Santa Cruz at Main Beach on Sunday.

Littlefield took first out 214 entrants in the International Triathlon in 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 55 seconds. He completed the 1,600-yard swim in 25:18, 24-mile bike stage in 56:12, and 5.7-mile run in 31:59.

Menlo Park’s Richard Mazzini took second in 2:00:10. Michael Sweetman, of Santa Cruz Triathlon Association, shaved 30 seconds off his 2024 time and took third for the second straight year in 2:00:17.

Santa Clara’s Gillian Staudt, a former distance swimmer at University of Toledo who hails from Bingham Farms, Michigan, took first among the women in 2:19:03. She completed the swim in 23:28, bike in 1:07:58, and run in 41:12.

Megen Schlesinger, a Maryland native who lives and trains in Colorado Springs, Colorado, took second in 2:20:12. San Jose’s Katie McIndoe took third in 2:29:09.

Two of the top three finishers in Sprint Triathlon were women. Los Altos’ Kelly Bishop, competing for Golden Gate Triathlon Club, took first out of 228 entrants in 1:09:21.

Bishop completed the 800-yard swim in 11:12, 12-mile bike stage in 35:14, and 3.05-mile run in 18:00.

Joshua O’Brien, competing for ICAN Tri Club Clovis, was second in 1:09:39. Santa Cruz’s Sarah Kletzer was third in 1:10:26.

Mountain biking

Ortenblad takes third: Santa Cruz’s Tobin Ortenblad, 31, took third in the Pro Men’s division at the 2025 Downieville Classic in Downieville over the weekend with a combined time of 2:44.50. He finished with six points.

Ortenblad, competing for Santa Cruz SRAM htSQD, took second in the 26.5-mile cross country race on Saturday in 1:59:02, and fourth in the 15-mile downhill race on Sunday in 45:48.

Carter Nieuwesteeg of Fernie, British Columbia, Canada, won the All-Mountain title with four total points after taking first on Saturday and third on Sunday. His combined time was 2:43.38.

Scott Chapin, 42, competing for Santa Cruz Bicycles, LLC., took first place with three points in the Singlespeed Open Men’s division. He completed Saturday’s race in 2:25:46 for second place and Sunday’s race in 49:16 for first.

Women’s golf

Inkster set for LPGA event: Santa Cruz native Juli Inkster, 65, will compete in the LPGA’s Portland Classic, which begins Thursday and runs through Sunday at Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Portland, Oregon.

Inkster, an LPGA and World Golf Hall of Fame member, has exempt status. The San Jose State alum and Los Altos resident has won 31 LPGA events and seven majors. She competes on the Legends of the LPGA tour.

Inkster is likely using the LPGA event as a warm-up for the U.S. Senior Women’s Open Championship, which takes place at San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista on Aug. 21-24.

The last LPGA event Inkster competed in was the JTBC Classic in Carlsbad in 2022. She missed the cut with a 12-over-par total.

Outrigger canoe

Na Pali Challenge: Santa Cruz’s Kua Nalu Canoe Club placed third in the Senior Master (50-plus years old) division at the 2025 Na Pali Challenge outrigger canoe race in Kauai, Hawaii, on Saturday.

Kua Nalu completed the 33-mile race from Kalapaki to Hanalei Bay in 4:57.

Event officials were forced to amend the original 37-mile course along the coast of Nā Pali Coast State Wilderness Park due to heavy swell forecasts.

Each team consisted of six wahine and six kane. The two teams took alternating turns in the canoe, making water changes every 30 minutes.

Competing for Kua Nalu were Dave Waynar, Robert Shear, Forrest Monroy, Dave Loustalot, Robert Boltje, Tai Boutell, Karen Harrington, Heidi Laber, Nicole West, Megan McMahon, Jana Jandra, and Samantha Garcia.
